Revitalization of New Binnenweg
The Nieuwe Binnenweg – a characteristic street with a rich history – has gradually deteriorated in recent years, both economically and architecturally. The Delfshaven sub-municipality has started an initiative to refurbish or revitalize the street. The revitalization process in the Nieuwe Binnenweg is becoming increasingly visible and just as much is happening behind the scenes. It is very important for the imaging that the changes are always well presented. Mapping revitalization. With the project 'Genius Loci of the Nieuwe Binnenweg' we want to make the change of the Nieuwe Binnenweg visible. In order to properly capture the 'spirit of the place', we do not initially think of the shape of a floor plan. Stories from residents who interpret the history, visions of the future of new entrepreneurs, the image of 19th century architecture and the distinct visual culture of Rotterdam all contribute to the multifaceted character of the street.
Research, publication & events
The entire study comprises five different (metropolitan) themes. The five themes form the basis for five different newspapers and the associated events. Each event takes place over 3 days. Each time in a different empty building. The publication has various functions: as an information carrier, announcing new events, as a temporary wallpaper and as a visible signal of change. In this way, the public is informed in a visually stimulating way about the continuous change on the Nieuwe Binnenweg. (Design and execution of five newspapers: Mark Mulder).
Theme 1: Heritage
The Voor/Heen Nieuwe Binnenweg project will start on Thursday 22 April 2009 in No. 236 a/b with the Heritage theme. In this first episode we look at the rich past, the noisy present and the hopeful future of the Nieuwe Binnenweg, one of the most characteristic streets of Rotterdam. What does that past consist of? What do we take with us to the future? What are we throwing away? In short: What is the heritage of the Nieuwe Binnenweg?
Theme 2: Remix
Remix is about reuse. Where is the Nieuwe Binnenweg going? Earlier we looked at the valuable things from the past with 'Heritage'. Remix is about how those things get meaning now. How is the Nieuwe Binnenweg remixed? Which new hybrid forms arise between different groups? We invite you to a three-day event of hip-hop, lyrical indulgence, thinking and doing. Within this theme, the slideshow below has been developed that encourages thinking about the remix theme in the context of revitalization.
Theme 3: Underground
Underground is a three-day event about the origin of invisible worlds on the Nieuwe Binnenweg, what they do and what the significance of underground is for the Nieuwe Binnenweg and its role in a metropolis. Underground is about the sharp edges of the city. In September, the focus was on the remix of the heritage of the Nieuwe Binnenweg, in Underground it is about the undertow; the city as a refuge for a wide variety of differences; the city as a generator of urban culture. The one-off autonomous fanzine 'Onderons' has been released especially for the last edition, which is made from the remnants of the printed program. Design in collaboration with Mark Mulder.
